Morro Bay

“What’s better than hiking in 100-degree heat?” —->Not hiking in 100 degree heat – damnit! – ME

When the temps kick up to thermal levels in the Paso Robles region, it’s time to head to the coast. Head to the coast for some air-conditioning. Head coastward for the beaches, shopping, slushies. Or head to the coast to hike.

Truth is come summertime – in SLO County coastal options are likely your best bet. With highways 46 and 41 west providing main arterials to Cambria and Cayucos, respectively, it’s only fitting that tourists should head out to the coast after a wine tasting for some coastal love.

Morro Bay fits that bill.

Hiking in Morro Bay gives visitors to the Central Coast several options. Explore miles of beach along the Morro Dunes Estuary, venture to the nearby Montana de Oro State Park or explore the volcanic knobs nearby off South Bay Drive, a popular destination for day hikes, rock climbs, mountain biking, picnicking and more.

Morro Bay is a wonderful, more rugged coastal alternative to south SLO County beaches. Cool, crisp air, towering coastal cliffs and the signature “Morro Rock,” this coastal town is sure to please.

What Morro Bay is not is an up-and-coming coastal enclave like Avila Beach. What it’s not is a pretentious beach town with a bunch of pricks. What it is is what it is. It’s funky, it’s got overhead powerlines everywhere but damn, it sure is pretty.

Miles of untouched beach await the hiker along the infamous Morro Strand in Morro Bay, Calif. situated between Cayucos and Los Osos.

Purple lupine spring to life along the sand dunes that run behind and next to the infamous “The Rock” in Morro Bay, California.

Camp fires stoke up the hiking vibe at Morro Rock, Calif. Unlike its southern California counterparts, the “rock” stills lets you kick back in style.

Hazards Canyon in Los Osos offers hikers great opportunities to access the dunes, as well as traverse and hike up nearby peaks in the Montaña de Oro State Park.

Scrambling to the top of rock outcroppings at Cerro Cabrillo near Morro Bay, Calif. off South Bay Drive.
